How to brush?

Brushing begins with selecting a good toothpaste that is right for you. Many varities exist and as long as it contains flouride it is acceptable. Choose a paste gel or powder based on personal preference. There are also sensitive teeth formulas if you experience pain associated with hot or cold beverages and foods. Next, insure that you have a good toothbrush, soft bristles are recommended, and replace your toothbrush at least every three months.

Begin brushing by applying your toothpaste to the brush. Place the head of the brush beside your teeth, with the bristles angled against the gum line. Realise that in brushing you are brushing your teeth, your gums and under the gumline as well. The brushing action should be an elliptical motion across each tooth, using a short stroke and a gentle scrubbing motion Do not use excessive force; the brushing action should be comfortable at all times and not produce any bleeding from the gums. Move the brush to the surface of each tooth and continue the elliptical motion. When the outside surfaces are done move to the inside surfaces as well. For the front teeth brush the inside surfaces by using the brush vertically and making several gentle up-and-down strokes over the teeth and gums. Also gently scrub the chewing surfaces of the upper and lower teeth. You can also brush your tongue to keep it clean and to ensure fresher breath.
